In life, important changes often start in the body rather than the mind, through subtle signals we gradually learn to recognize. This shift began for Marina Šprajc, a somatic experiencing practitioner who, after 25 years as a kindergarten teacher, in her fifties pursued a path linking her work with children, personal story, and the modern need to restore inner balance.
Marina observed children’s emotions, fears, spontaneity, and resilience, which inspired her personal journey toward somatic approaches—therapies recognizing that trauma is stored in the body, not just the mind. Somatic Experiencing, developed from the work of Dr. Peter Levine, focuses on the nervous system and the body’s stored experiences too intense to process in the moment.
Our body brings us back to the present moment
— We often listen only to our thoughts, forgetting that our body can return us to the present, says Marina, recalling how simple sensations—like her feet on the ground or her back against a chair—calmed her inner restlessness. When we slow down and notice physical sensations, we begin to shift attention away from endless thinking toward what is actually happening in the here and now. This embodied awareness can help reduce anxiety and strengthen our connection to ourselves in daily life.
Today, after completing her training as a Somatic Experiencing practitioner and nearing the end of her KidSoma specialization for children aged four to twelve, she sees her work as a continuation of providing support, presence, and a safe space. Years of volunteering, including reading to children in hospitals, deepened her understanding of vulnerability, resilience, and the healing power of relationships. By focusing on the body’s sensations rather than only thoughts, somatic work encourages a calm nervous system and a balanced emotional experience.
She believes your fifties are ideal for a new beginning and that slowing down to feel yourself again can be a brave, transformative step. This slowing down is not passive, she explains, but an intentional choice to notice the body’s signals, breathe into tension rather than push it away, and engage with the present moment more fully. In doing so, people can grow stronger in their internal resilience and find a grounding that supports lasting emotional balance.
How do you view your life journey today, and what has this new life cycle brought you?
— I see life as an opportunity for constant change, full of diverse experiences. Middle age brings insights that help me find what is best for myself, my loved ones, and all I encounter. Connection, respect, and trust allow co-regulation, which supports self-regulation and improves our environment. One key lesson is precisely this: co-regulation fosters self-regulation.
You worked 25 years as a kindergarten teacher. What drew you to this calling, and what did it teach you?
— Working with children allows us to remain playful, curious, and authentic. Children sense adults’ inner states, highlighting the importance of providing support. Partnering with parents and caregivers, I learned the value of resources and guidance to help both children and adults be their best selves.
Was there a moment that led you to pursue Somatic Experiencing practitioner training?
— Life’s challenges prompted me to explore new paths. Through reading, listening, and observing the somatic approach, I was immediately drawn to it. Pursuing this education allowed me to see and experience life more clearly, from a fresh perspective.
Many fear a career change after decades in one profession. Were you afraid?
— With support, change is possible. Sometimes it’s easier than staying in something that weighs us down. By taking time, planning carefully, and having guidance, I knew I wanted to follow this new path and be a support to those in need.
What would you say to women in their fifties seeking change?
— Listen to your desire, move slowly and wisely, and remember you are not alone. It’s never too late for change; your fifties are wonderful years.
